foodie friday: strawberry shortcake speech and language

If you know me, you know that I love to eat. You also know that I especially love to eat sweets! It is a problem. Strawberry shortcake is one of my favorite desserts. Today, we made it in my special education classroom during sensory group. Sensory group is so fun. I collaborate with our school OT, Vision Impairment teacher, and Orientation and Mobility specialist to create a fun group for our complex kids that really need to explore objects to learn.

Today, our VI teacher brought in a strawberry plant with the cutest little strawberries on it. I don't think I have seen strawberries actually growing haha. The kids got to touch and look at the plant. Next, we read a book about growing strawberries. Finally, we made strawberry shortcake!

I used my visuals (available on TPT) to sequence the steps for making strawberry shortcake and described the strawberry. The kids loved it and got really excited to request the next items to finish the cake. I got whipped cream that was in the spray can instead of cool whip and let me tell you, it was a hit! It is pretty fun to spray.

Not all the kids could eat the cake due to dysphagia. However, we were able to let them smell, explore with their hands, and taste some of the whipped cream on their lips. We talked about how it tasted and if we liked it or didn't like it (everyone liked it duh!).

It was such a fun and functional activity. Go download from my TPT store following this link:

Hope you enjoy and are able to use this idea in your classrooms! Happy Friday!!!
